The Common Municipal Court of the MRC du
Haut-Saint-Laurent was created by Order 310-95 on March 15, 1995, following the
signing of an inter-municipal agreement between several municipalities in which
they delegated their jurisdiction to the MRC.
The Municipal Court is common to all of the municipalities in the MRC du Haut-Saint-Laurent. It has jurisdiction over criminal and civil proceedings arising within the territory of all the municipalities that make up the MRC.
The jurisdiction of the Municipal Court includes claims arising from a municipal by-law such as municipal taxes.
It has jurisdiction in criminal matters for offences against municipal by-laws and for offences against Quebec laws such as the Highway Safety Code (L.R.Q., c. C-24.2) and the Act Respecting Off-Highway Vehicles (L.R.Q., c. V-1.2). The jurisdiction of the Municipal Court also allows it to handle cases involving minor offenders.
